Tennessee Onions

Delicious Tennessee Onions with a perfect blend of crunchy texture and creamy, melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions (preferably Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, pepper jack or mozzarella)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (seasoned or panko)
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or plant-based)
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil (optional, for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the onions into rings, about half an inch thick.
  3. Combine the shredded cheese, breadcrumbs, melted butter, and milk in a bowl.
  4. Arrange the onion rings in a baking dish, season with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the cheese mixture over the onions, covering them well.
  6. Drizzle with olive oil if desired.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Serve warm as a side dish.

Notes

Make-ahead by assembling a few hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake. Can be made in an air fryer for quicker cooking.
