- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 cup uncooked pasta (such as macaroni or penne)
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
