Chicken Bao Buns

Pillowy-soft dough encasing a savory filling of tender, shredded chicken, seasoned with ginger and garlic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • Green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center of the mixture. Pour in the yeast mixture along with the vegetable oil. Stir until the dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare the filling: While the dough rises, mix the shredded chicken, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced ginger, and garlic in a bowl.
  5. Shape the buns: After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small balls. Roll each ball out into circles, about 4-5 inches in diameter.
  6. Assemble the buns: Place a spoonful of the chicken filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling and seal tightly.
  7. Final proof: Arrange the filled buns on squares of parchment paper and let them rise for another 30 minutes, covered with a clean cloth.
  8. Steam the buns: Place the buns in a steamer over simmering water. Steam for about 10-15 minutes until fluffy and fully cooked. Garnish with green onions before serving.
