Caramelized Onion and Thyme Bread: A Flavorful Delight!

A deliciously savory bread infused with the rich flavors of caramelized onions and fresh thyme, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook until onions are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  3. Add flour, thyme, black pepper, and caramelized onions to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Let it cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use butter instead of olive oil for caramelizing the onions.
  • This bread pairs well with soups and salads.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
