Homemade Bread

A comforting homemade bread recipe that fills your home with warmth and nostalgia.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Warm 1 ½ cups of water and mix with 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix it up: Gradually add 4 cups of flour and 1 tablespoon of salt to the yeast mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn it onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Shape and second rise: Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, place in a greased loaf pan or proofing basket, and let rise for another 30-60 minutes.
  6. Preheat and bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Slash the top of the dough and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool completely: Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, let the dough rise in the refrigerator overnight. Slice and freeze for longer storage.
