Cruffins

Delightfully flaky cruffins that merge the best of croissants and muffins, filled with your choice of sweet or savory filling.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened (for layering)
  • Filling of choice (pastry cream, fruit jam, nutella, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients: In a spacious bowl, mix together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Whisk the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine warmed milk, melted butter, and egg.
  3. Make a well in the dry mix and pour in the wet mixture.
  4. Mix into dough: Stir together until a shaggy dough forms and knead gently for about 5 minutes.
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with a towel for about 1 hour.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Spread softened butter on top of the dough.
  8. Fold the dough in thirds to create layers.
  9. Cut the dough into strips and layer your desired filling.
  10. Place each rolled cruffin into a greased muffin tin.
  11. Final rise: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  12. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes.
  13. Cool slightly before serving and enjoy!

Notes

Make the dough a day in advance and refrigerate after the first rise for convenience. You can also customize fillings to your taste.
