Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fill the cupcake liners about 2/3 full with the batter.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let the cupcakes cool completely.
  8. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add the powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
  9. Add red food coloring to the frosting to achieve a bloody effect.
  10. Frost the cooled cupcakes generously.
  11. Crush the hard candy to create the broken glass effect and sprinkle it on top of the frosted cupcakes.
